A apparatus used for examination of an alimentary duct is called an endoscope. Examination of the upper part of an alimentary duct, that is duodenum (the initial section of small intestine), stomach and esophagus is done with a panendoscope usually called gastroscope. This may be either optical endoscope (gastrofiberscope - a doctor sees a patient?s alimentary duct through apparatus lens) or video endoscope (gastrovideoendoscope - a doctor and his team can see a patient?s alimentary duct on a screen).
So far gastroscopy was one of the most unpleasant examinations for patients. However it is the best method in diagnosis of osophagus, stomach and duodenum diseases. Only gastroscopy is effective enough to assert condition of a patient?s alimentary duct. However now, thanks to Fujinon gastroscope purchased by LIM CM we are able to make this examination less uncomfortable to you.
During gastroscopy a patient usually lies on his left side. After local anesthesia of a throat (done only in rare cases), a doctor inserts a plastic mouthpiece between lower and upper teeth in order to protect the apparatus from being bitten through. Then he inserts a 1 cm endoscope into a patient?s oral cavity and throat asking a patient to swallow an apparatus probe. This may be an unpleasant moment and requires co-operation with a doctor performing examination. Examination of an alimentary duct takes from a couple to a dozen or so minutes and is practically painless.
